Description:

A large and compelling archive of ephemera, photographs, beadwork, and other cultural material related to F.E. Thompson and John Two Guns White Calf (1872-1934), the last Chief of the Piegan Blackfeet and the individual rumored to have been the face of the Indian Head Nickel. Thompson was made an adopted Chief ("Ascesto") thanks to his charitable work and donations made. The vast majority of the items included were gifts to Thompson's niece, and other material relates to Thompson's work and relationship with Two Guns White Calf. The following material is included:

  • A silver gelatin photograph of Thompson and Two Guns White Calf, inscibed beneath each sitter and signed by Two Guns with his remarque upper left.

  • A large format silver gelatin photograph with Thompson central, flanked 6 Chiefs, sharing a peace pipe, and each Chief with an inscribed symbol near them.  

  • A broadside from the 1920s, telling of an upcoming talk by Mr. Thompson in Columbus.

  • 6 offset lithographs of work by Winold Reiss

  • One poster “In the Land of Plenty” by Babcock.

  • An interesting note, describing a number of the items included in this lot.  It reads the following: This Princess Ma-Chee-wa-na-chee. This belongs to Chief Ascesto made chief in 1924/ Blackfoot Reservation/ Glacier National Park, Montana./ The noise maker is made of buffalo toes/ The beads are made of sweet smelling root. The odor never leaves. The one chain is eagle claws “ “ “ is a sacred chain made of the front foot of the buffalo. Is not worn while living. The Ketchall was given if you are a member of the Brave Heart. Means one who has never run from a enemy. The ancient Indian way of tanning. They knead the animal fat from the leather with their teeth. The sole was made by a bag and beating with a club.

  • Another hide painting, pictorial story 

  • A beaded perimeter hide with geometric design to the central area.

  • A pair of beaded moccasins in US colors

  • A pair of beaded moccasins in red, white and blue strip patterns.

  • A pair of floral design beaded moccasins.

  • A girl’s dress, with beaded design and glass ringlets, leather tassels.

  • A pair of dolls.

  • A beaded rattle.

  • A heavily beaded pouch

  • A beaded headdress

  • A beaded rattle

  • A tanned leather stick.

  • A bone and beaded whistle.

  • A beaded pair of children’s moccasins.

  • A pair of beaded hide items.

  • A beaded and shell necklace.

    Condition:
  • Many in worn condition, though have been stored untouched for 50 years.
