Description:

PICKETT FAMILY (KENTUCKY) ACCOUNT BOOK/SCRAPBOOK & CIVIL WAR LETTER This unusual collection is comprised of an early Pickett family account book (accounts begin in 1862) that was repurposed as a scrapbook beginning in 1892. Multiple newspaper clippings have been pasted over the original accounts, many marking the celebration of the Kentucky Centennial; others include references to early Kentucky history, Mason County, Maysville, Kenton’s Station, Simon Kenton, and the Pickett Family.

In addition, several pages contain carefully copied letters dating from the late 1700’s related to Pickett’s land and property transfers in Fauquier County, Virginia, and other legal matters.

Also included is 1 original letter from James C. Pickett to his brother Thomas, dated Washington City, May 23, 1864. James Chamberlayne Pickett was the son of Col. John Pickett who emigrated from Fauquier County, Virginia to Kentucky, near Kenton’s Station ca. 1794. James C. Pickett was known as “one of the first scholars of Kentucky” and from “1824 to 1828 he was secretary of state under Governor Desha.”

This letter is particularly interesting because Pickett vehemently denounces the atrocities committed by Civil War generals on both sides: General George Pickett (a ‘rebel’ and a distant relation) and General McNeil who “put to death in cold blood ten confederates, not for the murder of any person, but for the absence of a Union man, who afterwards returned…from Illinois, to which he had gone on business.” Pickett then adds, “I would willingly pull a trigger on McNeil myself. A Union man!”
